Lanterns at the Provincial Jail

by Glady on December 16, 2008

Ever since I transferred here in Bacolod City, I would always look forward to the lanterns displayed in front of the Negros Occidental Provincial jail during Christmas season.

The bright colors of the lanterns can make you forget who crafted them.  These lanterns are made by the inmates themselves while their family sells them outside the jail. Through lantern-making, the inmates can at least help their family financially while serving their sentence.

Although sales are not as brisk as last year’s, a wife of an inmate said the sales from the lanterns are still a big help for their family.

I bought a set of lanterns the previous year which I gave to my mother and it still works today. It felt nice knowing I somehow helped the inmates provide for their family this Christmas.

We always buy our lanterns there. Even our lanterns here in Manila.

The unique craftsmanship of the Negros Provincial Jail Parol is always a sight to be seen everytime Christmas is near. We never fail to buy the parols every year to decorate our house there.
