Top 5 Reasons to Visit May's Organic Garden with Your Family

May’s Organic Garden is one of the best destinations in Negros Occidental if you want to learn more about organic farming. Working with different projects on organic agriculture has opened my eyes on the importance of producing organic food to help the small farmers, the environment and for our own health. Most of our meetings would be hosted by the Uy family at their home so I somehow witnessed how May’s Organic garden was transformed by May Uy into the beautiful garden and eco park that it is today.

Aside from educational tours, May’s Organic Garden is also a good destination for family outings. My husband and I want to grow our own vegetables in our backyard to make sure that the food we eat is organic and fresh. Growing your own food is a lot cheaper too. Having seen the demo farms at May’s Organic Garden, I invited my husband to go with me and fellow blogger Sigrid Lo and we brought along our respective kids too.

An educational tour is not the usual family outing but here are top 5 reasons why you should visit May’s Organic Garden as a family.

1. Learn About Organic Lifestyle at May’s Organic Garden

Choosing to live an organic lifestyle is something that’s hard to do alone. You have to get the support of your family so they too can start to live a much healthier lifestyle. Visiting May’s Organic Garden is a good option so they can see that a healthy lifestyle is doable and makes a lot of sense. There are a lot of organic  farming technologies that can be adopted even in your small backyard. Not everybody can raise a pig especially if you live in a subdivision, but anybody can start growing vegetables in containers using your own composted biodegradable wastes. We can learn about waste segregation as a family so that our entire household can reduce, reuse, and recycle our wastes. These are small steps but when done together, already a big leap towards a better waste management. It’s also best to teach kids to live a healthy lifestyle and care for the environment early in life.

2. Spend Quality Time in a Quiet and Secured Environment

Most resorts in Bacolod are too crowded especially on weekends and some people don’t like that. May’s Garden is a good alternative since their pool is just enough for a small group. It makes you feel safer too knowing they keep the gates closed. I know how parents can be very paranoid when it comes to their child’s safety. There are also other activities the kids can enjoy such as swan paddle boating, horseback riding, and tour around the ecopark on board a golf cart.

3. Enjoy Delicious, Healthy and Organic Food at May’s Organic Garden

May’s Organic Garden has a restaurant serving affordable organic food and they also have catering services. They serve the usual Ilonggo fare but it’s so scrumptious that I look forward to eating at May’s Organic Garden. Ma’am May makes sure that they only use the best and freshest ingredients because they get the vegetables from their farm and she does the marketing herself. She only serves her guests the food that she’s comfortable to serve to her family as well.

4. Help Small Farmers by Buying Organic Products

Aside from the demo farm, there’s also the PURO Organic processing plant at the eco park. PURO Organic uses the products from small farmers to produce their organic coffee, organic rice, coco sugar, yogurt, cheese, piaya, and calamansi juice among others. RU Botanicals has an oil distiller at the eco park where they produce lemongrass and citronella essential oils. These products are also sold at May’s Organic Garden to help small farmers earn more.

5. Learn More About Negrense Made Machinery and Equipment

RU Foundry and Machine Shop is a proud producer of the RU Shredder used by most Local Government Units for the manufacture of organic fertilizer.  RU Foundry also produces other equipment such as ram pump, windmill, and essential oil distiller. These are all available for demonstration at the ecopark of May’s Organic Garden.

You can do all these things alone but doing it as a family brings a whole new meaning into it. It’s easier to start and sustain an organic lifestyle if you have the support of your family. As the basic unit of society, everything starts with the family. A healthy family makes a healthy nation.
