Just an hour drive from Bacolod City is your sweet stop down south of Negros Occidental. Stopping by Mila’s Restaurant in Hinigaran has become a ritual every time we travel this route. We would often leave Bacolod early so we’ll have time to pass by Mila’s for coffee and some sweet treat. Nothing like a sugar fix to start the day.
The old photographs of the town that adorned the walls convey a homey ambiance that gives you an impression that today’s generation of Hinigaranons grew up with the restaurant and everybody in town has dined here at some point in their life. Indeed, Mila’s is already a household name that you would always remember with sweet thoughts of their food.
Royal Bibingka
Mila’s Royal Bibingka (P17) is its most famous product and best-seller as well. It’s moist, fluffy and topped with coconut strips and grated cheese. Bacoleños eagerly seek out Mila’s Royal Bibingka at the Hinigaran Pavilion during the Panaad Festival.
Buko Pie
Mila’s Buko Pie is filled with layers of large young coconut slices and cream filling. You might consider it a little expensive at P20 per slice since it’s smaller than the usual buko pie, but wait till you’ve tasted it. It will give your Los Baños buko pie a run for their money.
Bitchokoy
Bitchokoy or Bitsokoy to some, is our local version of doughnut and Mila’s is filled with melted cheese and rolled in sugar. Bitchokoy (P11) is perfect for coffee and should be eaten while hot.
Potato Cake
Mila’s Potato Cake (P31) will probably shoot up your blood sugar to dangerous level if you’re diabetic. But it’s a temptation that you’d love to take. It’s two layers of potato cake topped with a thin butter frosting and slightly caramelized sugar. If eaten without the topping, the potato cake is mildly flavored with bits of potatoes. The topping add more flavor and texture to the cake. It’s sweet, buttery and the slightly caramelized sugar is crunchy to bite with the texture of sugar crystals.
My dining experiences at Mila’s Restaurant has always been a pleasant one. If you’re a frequent traveler, you might have experienced having to look for a clean restroom. You need not worry while at Mila’s since they are an “Accredited Pee Stop” by the Women in Travel Bacolod City. Indeed, their restroom was very clean with soap, running water and toilet paper.
Don’t forget to bring home pasalubong for your loved ones from Mila’s if you happen to pass by Hinigaran. Mila’s is along the highway just beside the public plaza.
