School in San Carlos City Awarded Second Place in Disaster Response Among ASEAN

Iliranan Elementary School in Brgy. Codcod, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental won second place in the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO)-Japan Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Award.

School principal Gary Magnanao led the 15 teachers and 439 students  in making emergency response drill part of the school’s activity. The school’s entry “Iliranan Disaster Education Programme and SCAPED – School and Community Always Prepared and Equipped for Disaster” bested 70 entries from South East Asia in the search which has the theme “Education for Disaster Risk Reduction.”

If you’ve been to Codcod you will understand and appreciate the program of the school. Codcod is an upland barangay which 34 km away from San Carlos City. It is also located at the foot of Mt. Kanlaon where most of its sitios are part of the Mt. Kanlaon National Park. The location of Codcod n makes it vulnerable to volcanic eruption and landslide thus disaster risk reduction is of utmost importance.

Iliranan Elementary School was also awarded one of ASEAN Eco-Friendly School last July 2012 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Congratulations Iliranan Elementary School! may you inspire other schools to follow your example.
