What is a Lunar Halo?

Moon Ring (photo by Gary Lake Liza)

The moon on a clear sky last night was a sight to behold with a ring around it called a halo. I’ve seen this before but I never bothered to ask what makes a lunar halo. Well thanks to Google it’s so much easier to get an answer nowadays.

According to this site, “Halos around the moon – or sun – are a sign of thin cirrus clouds drifting high above our heads. They are a sign of nearby storms.” Cirrus clouds contain millions of tiny ice crystals which causes light to refract and reflect.

Well, it’s nice to know that there’s a scientific explanation to the connection between the moon ring  or lunar halo and not just some superstition.

It’s also interesting to note that each of us are seeing the halo differently since each of us is looking from a different angle.
