In my opinion, when there are lawyers, surely, there will be politics.

I hope that one from the Visayas will win the Most Outstanding Legal Aid Lawyer!

Yes Ray, there is one for the Most Outstanding Legal Aid Lawyer Award for Eastern Visayas!

I hope they have already improved their system in choosing the wards. I learned that Quiñanola won the award not on the merits but because he was a close friend of the award committee.

I heard that the convention in Bacolod was so disorganized and that city as a venue was too small to accommodate a national event of that magnitude. The national organizers should llearn that lesson and avoid holding national conventions in such very small city as Bacolod the next time around.

I heard it was disorganized but that’s not the fault of the city. I wasn’t part of the activity so I cannot provide enough information. I hope somebody who attended the convention can enlighten us so that we can all learn from that experience.

Definitely it was not the fault of the city. It was the fault of the IBP national organizers and IBP regional governor who did not foresee the problem.

if indeed the ibp national convention 2009 was disorganized, the host city of bacolod has nothing to do with it. it’s the organizer’s fault. for benjie, the city of smiles is much bigger compared to other cities in the country. it’s the convention capital of the south and it has world-class facilities. for the past, if you’re not aware, the city hosts to several international and national events, not to mention local gatherings. for benjie, you are very much welcome to visit bacolod and see for yourself what it can offer. if the recent ibp convention was a fiasco
it’s the people behind it which was to blame, not city, which you mentioned as too small to host a national event.
welcome na welcome ka sa bacolod benjie, “kadto ka didto”.

I was also wondering in what sense Bacolod City is small. A city with almost 500,000 residents is far from being small. In fact Bacolod’s land area is more than twice of Iloilo City’s. If it’s the amenities, I think the hotels and pension houses are enough to accommodate 2,000 guests. I hope Benjie can elaborate on his comment.

As a lawyer based in Davao City who attended the 12th National Convention of Lawyers in Bacolod last March 26-28, 2009, I want to set the record straight. First, in fairness to the city of Bacolod, it ‘s not too small to accomodate all the lawyers who attended. The truth of the matter was, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) National Office based in Quezon City, requested the IBP Negros Occidental Chapter, the host chapter, to prepare for 1,200 delegates. IBP Negros Occidental even prepared for 1,500 delegates, and the venue was at the Bacolod Pavillon Hotel convention hall, with a capacity of 1,500. However, on the first day, an unexpected 1,800 delegates from all over the country arrived. On the second day of March 27, total delegates reached 2,380, thus overflowing the convention hall, the highest number of delegates in all IBP convention of lawyers in history. So, it is more correct to say that the convention hall was small to accomodated the unexpected huge number of delegates, period. Based on my talks with my fellow lawyers coming from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao who attended, the convention was a success. They had high praises for Bacolod, like the good wide roads, the ease of transport and everything is near; they liked the food like diwal, chicken inasal, the Negros Museum, the museums in nearby Talisay and Silay cities, Mambukal, and many even bought fighting cocks to bring home. I hope this comment can enlighten the public.

I am a lawyer from Cebu who attended the IBP National Convention in Bacolod with my law officemate. The convention was a bit disorganized during the first day because the convention hall was small compared to the many number of participants. So, other participants from the other provinces and cities who arrived in the afternoon of the first day had to sit near the entrance door. But it was remedied the second day until it was finished. Bacolod City has nothing to do with the convention, it was the IBP, the official national organization of lawyers in the country, which had organized it. And it is not true that Bacolod was too small to host the lawyers convention, for it is not. During the convention, I and my law officemate stayed at L’Fisher, and we have observed that Bacolod City is big, huge, and the Bacolodnons are nice and sweet. We have observed also that its roads and streets are bigger than Cebu City, less traffic, and the food was delicious, like the chicken inasal. This coming May I will visit agains Bacolod, this time with my family, and for pleasure.

Benjie on April 11, 2009 commented that he “heard that the convention in Bacolod was so disorganized and that city as a venue was too small to accommodate a national event of that magnitude. The national organizers should llearn that lesson and avoid holding national conventions in such very small city as Bacolod the next time around.” Has Benjie visited Bacolod? Me, I personally did visit Bacolod for the first time when I attended our national convention of lawyers last march 26-28. So, when I read Benjie’s comment, I almost die laughing. Nothing could be farther from the truth. From what I have personally observed, Bacolod is a big city, like a mini-metropolis already. Bacolod is much, much bigger than the cities that I have seen in Central Luzon, where I am based and practise my law profession.

I am amused reading the comments of lawyers about their convention in Bacolod. I have noted that they write in verbose language. Guess, they can bill their clients more with more words. More words, more money. Less words, less money. But yes, we still need lawyers, though.

Reply

Allan April 29, 2009 at 3:20 pm

It is UNFAIR to state that lawyers bill according to their VERBOSITY. Please realize that what is considered are the complexity and importance of the case, the time and efforts poured into it like study of voluminous records, research of laws and jurisprudence, and even the risks that they have face in handling the case. We hear about many lawyers being GUNNED down in work-related killings. The public has this WRONG notion for a long time. Something must be done to correct is misperception.
